I Will Praise You On the Mountain

Highlands (Song Of Ascent)
O how high would I climb mountains
If the mountains were where You hide
O how far I'd scale the valleys
If You graced the other side
O how long have I chased rivers
From lowly seas to where they rise
Against the rush of grace descending
From the source of its supply
'Cause in the highlands and the heartache
You're neither more or less inclined
I would search and stop at nothing
You're just not that hard to find
I will praise You on the mountain
And I will praise You when the mountain's in my way
You're the summit where my feet are
So I will praise You in the valleys all the same
No less God within the shadows
No less faithful when the night leads me astray
You're the heaven where my heart is
In the highlands and the heartache all the same
O how far beneath Your glory
Does Your kindness extend the path
From where Your feet rest on the sunrise
To where You sweep the sinner's past
And O how fast would You come running
If just to shadow me through the night
Trace my steps through all my failure
And walk me out the other side
For who could dare ascend that mountain
That valleyed hill called Calvary
But for the One I call Good Shepherd
Who like a lamb was slain for me
I will praise You on the mountain
And I will praise You when the mountain's in my way
You're the summit where my feet are
So I will praise You in the valleys all the same
No less God within the shadows
No less faithful when the night leads me astray
You're the heaven where my heart is
In the highlands and the heartache all the same
Whatever I walk through
Wherever I am
Your Name can move mountains
Wherever I stand
And if ever I walk through
The valley of death
I'll sing through the shadows
My song of ascent
Whatever I walk through
Wherever I am
Your Name can move mountains
Wherever I stand
And if ever I walk through
The valley of death
I'll sing through the shadows
My song of ascent
My song of ascent
My song of ascent
From the gravest of all valleys
Come the pastures we call grace
A mighty river flowing upwards
From a deep but empty grave
So I will praise You on the mountain
And I will praise You when the mountain's in my way
You're the summit where my feet are
So I will praise You in the valleys all the same
No less God within the shadows
No less faithful when the night leads me astray
You're the heaven where my heart is
In the highlands and the heartache all the same

The past few days have been nothing short of amazing.

Yesterday we did site work in the morning and went to Quito TelefériQo up Ecuador’s Pichincha Volcano in the afternoon.  From the top, we could see the entire city of Quito.  It was quite a sight!  Then last night we had our traditional dinner on the mountaintop and ride back down on a "party" bus (complete with a mariachi band on the back).

Today, we spent the entire day at the site.  Sounds of love and laughter filled the air all day long.  I got the opportunity to go on a home visit this morning.  To say this home visit was special is an understatement.

We visited a grandmother who was in charge of looking after her 6 grandchildren.  When we arrived, we were greeted with a warm welcome into this very small home.  We made small talk and got to know the family, but of course communication is always a barrier so the conversation didn't roll as nicely as I had hoped.  As with each home visit we make, we present the family with a Bible and a box full of basic needs such as rice, oil, milk, etc., but this time was so much more.  We were asking to take a photo with the family before we left, but she asked if we had a few minutes more so that she could offer us a meal.  She said that she wanted to cook a feast for us, but wasn't sure if we would like it plus she had a broken arm so her daughter had to take care of preparation.  Instead, they prepared beef and rice for us.  Of course we couldn't turn down the meal that they had spent time preparing for us, so we sat together and broke bread.  This might be one of the most powerful moments I have ever had in this country.  According to our translator, it is a symbol of showing gratitude and wanting people to feel welcome.  After eating, we took photos and headed back to the church.

Wow.  What an amazing gesture.  These people are so loving and kind.  They are willing to give you the shirt off their backs just to make you feel welcome.  They want us to know how appreciative they are for the work that we do here.  These people, who have nothing, are willing to give us everything to show us how much they care.  What if we all lived like that?  What if instead of being greedy with our last dollar or our last piece of bread, we shared with someone else to make them feel loved?  Isn't that what Jesus would do?  Let that sink in for a few minutes.

We spend so much time chasing the next dollar or trying to keep up with the Joneses that we forget how to love others.  We forget how to be kind, compassionate human beings.  I could go anywhere else in the world to help people, but this is why I choose to keep coming back to this place.

Our translator told us that this was the first time in all of the home visits that they do that someone has prepared a meal for the visitors.  God was testing our faithfulness.  We could have chosen to say no or we could have rested in the knowledge that God was going to take care of us.  I will choose the latter over and over again.

From the highest of mountains to the lowest of valleys, I will serve and praise Him until my very last breath.

No Words...

I have been trying to come up with the words for today, and I am pretty sure that there are none that could describe it.  Do you ever have trouble finding the words for how good our God is?  I know I sure do.  So... instead of writing about our day, I thought I'd show you.

Goodness of God
I love You, Lord
For Your mercy never failed me
All my days, I've been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
And all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
I love Your voice
You have led me through the fire
And in darkest night You are close like no other
I've known You as a Father
I've known You as a Friend
And I have lived in the goodness of God, yeah!
And all my life You have been faithful, oh
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God, yeah!
'Cause Your goodness is running after, it's running after me
Your goodness is running after, it's running after me
With my life laid down, I'm surrendered now
I give You everything
'Cause Your goodness is running after, it's running after me, oh-oh
'Cause Your goodness is running after, it's running after me
Your goodness is running after, it's running after me
With my life laid down, I'm surrendered now
I give You everything
'Cause Your goodness is running after, it keeps running after me
And all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I'm gonna sing of the goodness of God
I'm gonna sing, I'm gonna sing
'Cause all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I'm gonna sing of the goodness of God
Oh, I'm gonna sing of the goodness of God

Third Time's A Charm

Brokenness.  The past two times I have been to Ecuador, that is what I felt, broken.  My heart ached for the people here because of the things that they didn't have or couldn't do, but today as I sat upon the hilltop with children surrounding me while we watched everyone around us, all I could feel is happy.

Sometimes we get so caught up in the things we think people need, we forget that the one thing everyone really needs is Jesus.  A relationship with Him will put people on the path to having everything they could ever want and more.

I had a conversation about a young woman who lives in Ecuador and is doing everything she can to make ends meet, but the money she makes isn't enough to cover much more than her basic living expenses.  She wants to go to college and get the education she has always desired, but cannot because every higher paying job that she has been offered is on a weekend where she wouldn't be able to attend church.  She refuses to sacrifice her growing relationship with Christ.  Wow.  What a testimony!  I have no doubt in my mind that the Lord will bless her in more ways than she could ever imagine because of her faithfulness.  This conversation really got me thinking... what if there was something we could do to help women like her?  What if there was a way that these women, who exist all around the world, could attend college and better themselves because there were enough people who believed in them?  Man, could you imagine?

A few members of our team went on a home visit today while the rest of us taught VBS or did construction.  The family that they visited built a house for themselves with the help of their family in hopes to have a better life.  They have very low income and the mother is in college to become a CPA.  They knew they couldn't buy a home because they would never be able to afford it.  The mother also had gone away from the church because she was ashamed that she didn't have a Bible.  She didn't want to be ridiculed for having to do without.  She told this to our team and then they presented her with her very on Bible.  Our team had no idea she was going to share that story with them.  She was so grateful that she was brought to the verge of tears.  They don't have much, but what they do have are the greatest gifts we could ever possess.  Love and family.

Isn't it interesting that our troubles are universal?  Financial problems, health problems, marriage problems, etc.  All of these things happen to everyone in the world.  We all have to juggle stuff.  We all wish that things were better from time to time.  We get so focused on getting things done that we forget to take time to stop and give praise.  We all have to put our trust in God to direct our path.  He knows our every need.

Our VBS lesson today was about Jesus washing people's feet.  What better example of servanthood than to wash your brother's feet?  We are called to go out and spread the love of Christ that we have been so graciously given.  No matter whether it is in our own back yard or thousands of miles from home.

Something amazing is happening here.  Something new, something grand.  I can't wait to find out what it is, but I do know that serving others is one of the most important things Christians are called to do.  Even in the midst of our mess.  Christ wants us exactly where we are, mess and all.

The song "As You Find Me" by Hillsong United played over and over in my mind today.  Your love's too good to leave me here.

As You Find Me
I've been strong
And I've been broken within a moment
I've been faithful
And I've been reckless at every bend
I've held everything together
And watched it shatter
I've stood tall and I have crumbled
In the same breath
I have wrestled
And I have trembled toward surrender
Chased my heart adrift
And drifted home again
Plundered blessing
Till I've been desperate to find redemption
And every time I turn around
Lord You're still there
I was found
Before I was lost
I was Yours
Before I was not
Grace to spare
For all my mistakes
And that part just wrecks me
And I know I don't deserve this kind of love
Somehow this kind of love is who You are
It's a grace I could never add up
To be somebody You still want
But somehow
You love me as You find me
Who am I
To think Your glory needs my praises
But if this borrowed breath is Yours Lord
Take it all
You are faithful and You are gracious
And I'm just grateful
To think You don't need a single thing
And still You want my heart
I was found
Before I was lost
I was Yours
Before I was not
You wear the scars
For all my mistakes
And that part just wrecks me
And I know I don't deserve this kind of love
Somehow this kind of love is who You are
It's a grace I could never add up
To be somebody You still want
But somehow
You love me as You find me
You love me as You find me
You love me as You find me
You love me as You find me
You love me as You find me
Your love's too good to leave me here
(You love me as You find me)
Your love's too good to leave me here
(You love me as You find me)
Your love's too good to leave me here
(You love me as You find me)
Your love's too good to leave me here
If You want my heart
I won't second guess
‘Cause I need Your love
More than anything
I'm in
I'm Yours
Your love's too good to leave me here
Your love's too good to leave me
If You want my heart
I won't second guess
‘Cause I need Your love
More than anything
I'm in
I'm Yours
Your love's too good to leave me here
Your love's too good to leave me
If You want my heart
I won't second guess
‘Cause I need Your love
More than anything
I'm in
I'm Yours
Your love's too good to leave me here
Your love's too good to leave me
And I know I don't deserve this kind of love
Somehow this kind of love is who You are
It's a grace I could never add up
To be somebody You still want
But somehow
You love me as You find me
If You want my heart
I won't second guess
‘Cause I need Your love
More than anything
I'm in
I'm Yours
Your love's too good to leave me here
Your love's too good to leave me
If You want my heart
I won't second guess
‘Cause I need Your love
More than anything
I'm in
I'm Yours
Your love's too good to leave me here
Your love's too good to leave me
